What were you doing before Shillington?
I was a dancer and a dance teacher. I wanted to change my career path and still do something creative! After a little research I felt that I would really enjoy graphic design. Shillington’s full-time course was a perfect option for me, as it allowed for a quick career transition.
Where has your career taken you since Shillington?
Two days after graduating in 2011 I accepted an internship at Frost* which turned into a full-time position. After around a year and a half at Frost*, I became a mid-weight designer at Re, an internal brand consultancy run out of M&C Saatchi. Then, in late 2014 I moved to San Francisco to become a designer at Apple, Inc and I’ve since become an Art Director.
From dancer to Shillington, now an Art Director at Apple. What does your work life look like now?
I get the opportunity to work with some super talented people here. At first I was hugely intimidated and now I’m just in awe of the talent. The crazy thing about the projects you work on here is that, at one point or another, the work you contribute to will be seen across the planet. It’s a huge demographic to please, and it can be a bit of a mind blow.
What was the most valuable thing you took away from the course?
It’s hard to name just one thing. The course really prepared me for the reality of the design world. Each day at Shillington felt like a full working day, which really helped when it came to real world deadlines.
The lecturers were all amazing, and their experience in the industry was a valuable benefit. They were active in the design community and encouraged us to fully immerse ourselves in what was going on design-wise—in Sydney and globally. I still refer to my lesson notes whenever I need a quick recap.
