Lucy Kirkwood
Lucy Kirkwood is the founder of Lucky & Son Studio, based from Bilinga in the beautiful Bundjalung Nation. I am passionate about sharing unique and inspiring stories from adventurous businesses across Australia and the world. Sexy typography, playful packaging and branding with heart is at the core of everything I do, all whilst chasing after two young kids and stepping on a fair amount of Lego at the same time.
What do you love about design?
Design has been pivotal in my life well before I could open a laptop. From an artist mother and surveyor father, my upbringing was a mix of the creative with the logical, so it’s no wonder I turned into a designer! I love that once you learn about design, it’s impossible to not notice good or bad design everywhere. It can be a curse when choosing wine but I can’t ignore a well designed label.
Why do you enjoy working in design education?
I love watching design students grow and evolve over time, nurturing the future talent of design has been extremely rewarding and challenging for me.
What keeps you busy outside of Shillington?
Entertaining my two very energetic kids certainly keeps me busy but I love surfing, multi-day hikes (my longest was a 450km stroll) and creating things with my hands.
What or who are you loving right now?
Big love to my craft queens Kitiya Palaskas and Rachel Burke whose creations always bring a smile to my face, fashion designer Angel Chen and the honesty of AdamJK.
If you were a typeface, what would you be?
A lovely font like Fonde but printed onto Extract (a paper stock made from recycled coffee cups) as I’d need that caffeine hit.
What’s your favourite blog?
Not much of a blogger but I love following the work of James Clear as I believe we are the product of our daily habits.
