The Shillington Graphic Design Course is one course—the same content is delivered across both study options.

You’ll learn the same comprehensive industry-focused curriculum with our talented design teachers and graduate with a commercial portfolio and website that will help you kick-start your creative career. Each option offers a total of 590 study hours across real time learning and independent study.

Full-time

4 hours live teaching & 3.5 hours independent learning per day

Commit yourself 100% to learning Monday-Friday for 3 months and start your creative career as quickly as possible.

Week 1 - Your first week will introduce you to the fundamentals of graphic design, help establish good working processes, introduce your first Adobe design app, Indesign, and even dive into the first brief!

Week 2 - This week your focus will turn to bringing expression into design where you are introduced to typography, colour, ideation techniques and conceptual thinking which is all put to practice in more fun briefs.

Week 3 - You will be introduced to your second Adobe CC app, Illustrator whilst developing further ideation processes. You will then work on more amazing briefs using your new skills on the design apps.

Week 4 - The course shifts its attention to digital design where you will take a deep dive into Figma and UX / UI processes culminating in a team focussed project where you design your first app. No coding, all design.

Week 5 - Another week, another Adobe App. Here you will be introduced to Photoshop, whilst further enhancing your digital design skills on a website brief. Plus you will be introduced to basic animation techniques.

Week 6 - You will now put all of your skills and processes into developing your first brand. Working in groups you will develop a brand strategy for a start-up company before then individually designing a brand identity.

Week 7 - Design Foundations concludes with you developing your brand into an industry standard presentation before you then move on to your first brief in the Design applied module of the course.

Week 8 - Design Applied continues with extensive briefs across packaging and editorial design. You will learn more complex program skills on these extensive briefs.

Week 9 - This week provides the opportunity to bring your passions / interests to the forefront with a company rebrand of your choice. This will include a new identity and extensive rollout across digital and print outputs.

Week 10 - This week you will get hands on developing a campaign style project that requires using off-screen techniques to answer a brief.

11-13

Weeks 11-13 - This is where the magic happens. A chance to revisit your briefs and develop them further so you leave with an industry standard portfolio and website, ready for the job hunt.

Part-time

3 hours live teaching, 3 days a week

Study design Monday-Wednesday over 9 months without quitting your job. Manage your own study time with flexible learning, before embarking on your creative career.

Month 1 - During your first month you will learn all about design fundamentals, learn your first design app and develop initial ideation techniques to help answer your first few briefs.

Month 2 - You will be introduced to your second design program, Illustrator. You'll apply your skills and process to more exciting briefs.

Month 3 - Here you will jump into the world of digital design. You'll understand the balance between form and function. You will learn UI and UX skills during group and individual working, then apply them to app and web design briefs. All design, no coding required!

Month 4 - This month we introduce you to Photoshop and further briefs to apply these new skills. You will learn how Photoshop can be used in practical and creative ways.

Month 5 - Working in groups you will develop a brand strategy for a given start up before designing the brand identity individually alongside further design outputs for that company, including an industry standard pitch presentation.

Month 6 - At this point of the course you will start to work on more extensive briefs in packaging, editorial design and a company rebrand. All whilst building your confidence and independence in the programs.

Month 7 - You will jump in between projects during this month, as you would within a studio setting. You will develop these soft skills by continuing to develop your packaging and company rebrand projects.

Month 8 - The month starts with a chance to roll up your sleeves and get hands on, creating an off-screen element for an event campaign. The month then shifts your attention to your portfolio design. This is where the magic happens.

Month 9 - By now your portfolio will be in full flow. You will revisit your briefs and develop them further, so you leave Shillington with an industry standard portfolio and website—ready for the job hunt.

To ensure you graduate with the skills needed to succeed, our final module, Design for Employment, prepares you to hit the ground running. You'll revisit projects, refining them to a higher standard with improved skills and confidence for your final portfolio.

You’ll also develop extensive rollouts for your projects, as well as your own personal identity and brand. When you’re ready to graduate, we invite industry professionals to review your portfolio. This gives you vital practice in interviews and valuable insights from potential employers.
