Nick Bailey

Nick Bailey is an experienced brand strategist and a talented designer having worked at some of Australia’s most creative advertising and design agencies. For the past 4 years I have called Adelaide home, working as creative director on numerous advertising, design projects, across all media. Nick also spent over 10 years working at some of Sydney’s largest Advertising Agencies, working on international, national and state design and advertising campaigns across all media types—6 of these years were spent as Head of Design at URSA Clemenger. Nick thrives on strategic planning with clients as well as presenting creativity. Before moving to Australia, Nick put his creative talents to work in the UK for over 12 years—working with clients across both England and Europe.

What do you love about design?

If you look, design touches you in every part of your life. And that’s kinda cool.

Why do you teach?

The best moment for me is witnessing a student grasp a concept for the first time. There is no better reward than helping a student finally reach clarity, and this moment can be life-changing for them. I love encouraging students to reach beyond their expectations, getting them to push past what is comfortable into new and uncharted waters.

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.

It’s spanned many years, traversed continents and been a fun and adventurous ride along the way. Working with big corporates with huge budgets to free work for mates who only offer a few coldies as payment—every brief has been fresh and exciting. I’m presently working on projects now that I pick, having more fun and pushing the norms of the everyday.

If you were a typeface, what would you be?

I would be Helvetica—a Classic and reliable typeface. Clean and streamlined, it doesn’t get bogged down in superfluous detail or decoration. Its versatility and simplicity is its key and you’re the master of both.

What’s your favourite blog?

I am not a massive blog person, but if I had to pick things that I’m into then they would be, Ads of the World, Wieden+Kennedy for all their Nike ads and Droga5.
