What do you love about design?

I love how graphic design is everywhere in the world and we all interact with it in our own unique way. I am constantly inspired by how design can be used for everything from instructional graphics to providing a visual language for protest. I also love the democracy of design and how accessible it is for people to communicate their ideas visually wether that be creating memes or cut and paste zines.

Why do you teach?

I teach because I want to help people achieve their goals and allow their creativity to be channeled into something positive. I have a lot of faith in the power of creative thinking and it’s an absolute privilege to work with people who are looking for new and innovative ways to communicate ideas.

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.

My route into design came through working with musicians, bands and live venues to create posters, flyers and record sleeves. From there I have worked with clients ranging from high end fashion brands to Finland’s only natural wine producer. I have had a lifelong obsession with T-shirt graphics too and I’ve been able to channel this passion into designing T-shirt graphics for Warner musics roster of amazing artists. Recently I’ve worked with a number of charities and organisations such as Extinction Rebellion to create campaigns which aim to have a positive impact on our world.

What or who are you loving right now?

Narcsville is one of my favourite designers and his recent animated and video work is super inspiring and fun. Recently he brought old copies of magazines like NME to life for a music video and his obsession with pop culture adds an interesting dimension to his work.

If you were a typeface, what would you be?

It has to be Futura! Futura was used by NASA in the 60s and it adorns the plaque left by the Apollo 11 astronauts on the surface of the moon. Back on earth it’s also been used to great effect by Stanley Kubrick, Nike and Wes Anderson.

What’s your favourite blog?

It’s Nice That and Creative Boom are great but I usually find most of my inspiration on Instagram.
