Shillington’s Diversity in Design program

Diversity in Design

Shillington’s Diversity in Design program for 2024 will be launching soon, watch out for more updates!

Shillington’s Diversity in Design program adds to evolving efforts to support and strengthen equity by cultivating diverse and inclusive representation in the design industry—within our classrooms and beyond.

The program includes an annual full scholarship for the Shillington graphic design course and industry mentorships open to budding graphic designers from underrepresented backgrounds. This may include but is not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes.

As design educators, we have a unique opportunity to shape and foster a more inclusive and diverse creative industry. Our diversity scholarships and industry mentoring are steps towards creating more opportunities for underrepresented groups to enter and excel in the creative field.

We believe that a curriculum that reflects diverse perspectives and voices is crucial in creating an inclusive environment where every student feels valued and welcomed and promotes collaboration, innovation and creativity.

Our goal is to inspire our graduates with these values and to become leaders in championing a more diverse and inclusive industry.

Sam Fraser, 2021 Scholarship Recipient

“Separate from the practical skills I’ve learnt, the course prepared me for the industry by improving my confidence as a designer through working in an empowering learning environment with super supportive teachers and creative people.”

Url Grant, 2021 Scholarship Recipient

“As a Black, queer, non-binary designer, Diversity in Design means representation. I should not be selected for a project with the intent to create diversity. I should be one of multiple different identities that make up a team.”

Georgina Charles, 2021 Scholarship Recipient

“Before finding out I won the scholarship—I had already made my peace with being passed over, but when they said that they all loved my janky little comic I nearly cried. Things like this don’t happen to me.”

FAQs

We will be providing 1 full Diversity in Design Scholarship for both London and New York on campus courses. Half scholarships will be given based on the quality of applications—we’re planning to give at least one per campus.

We keep the application criteria very open so you can express your creativity! It’s more about showing us your personality, so concentrate on the idea and don’t worry as much about the technical aspects.

Absolutely! We encourage you to apply for both the Full and/or Half Scholarship even if you are already enrolled in the course. If your scholarship application is successful, we will refund any course fees you’ve already paid.

If you plan on studying at Shillington in September 2023 regardless of our scholarships, we recommend you enrol as soon as possible to secure your spot, as spots can fill quickly and we don’t want you to miss out.

If you’re successful, we’ll refund 50% or 100% of the course fees—depending on which scholarship you receive.

We’d love to welcome you to Shillington New York! As stated in the terms and conditions, to win the scholarship, you must have proven visa rights to study at Shillington in New York City in September 2023. You are responsible for acquiring a visa that allows you to study for the duration of the course. If you require a student visa, please review the M-1 Student Visa process and requirements, and understand the process can take up to 2-3 months. You are responsible for acquiring a visa that allows you to study for the duration of the course.

If you plan to study at Shillington New York in September 2023 regardless of being provided a scholarship, we recommend you start the M-1 Visa process as soon as possible. We can’t guarantee you’ll be approved for a visa in time, but if you receive the visa in time and the scholarship, we’ll refund 50% of your course fees.

If you would only be able to study at Shillington New York in September 2023 if you win the scholarship, by the time we announce successful applicants, the timing to apply/be approved for the M-1 student visa would be too tight. We can’t guarantee that you will be approved a visa in time, but if you receive the visa in time and the scholarship, we’ll refund 50% of your course fees.

We hope to award scholarships to applicants with a wide range of identities and experiences. Underrepresented groups may include (but is not limited to) race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes. We recognise that underrepresentation manifests differently across circumstance, location and context, so we encourage applicants to self-identify and explain.

Our Diversity in Design Full Scholarship and Industry Mentorship opportunity is only available for our on campus courses in New York and London. The reason behind this is to ensure our Diversity in Design students can get ample support from Shillington, and have face-to-face mentorship from the industry mentors after graduation.

Absolutely! Even if you’re not located in one of our campus countries, you can still apply for our Online courses. These courses are available globally and conducted across four diferrent Streams—check which Stream works best for your timezone here.

Unfortunately due to the number of applications, we can’t provide individual feedback.

Whilst we cannot offer specific partnership mentoring for half scholarship recipients, we have a network of industry professionals who are dedicated to supporting Shillington students beyond graduation. They offer valuable guidance, share their industry knowledge and provide feedback to help you succeed in your design journey.

Yes! Applicants can self-identify in their applications. This may include, but is not limited to, race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes.

If applying for both, you’ll need to fill out both application forms separately but can use the same submission materials for both! Apply here for the Full Scholarship and here for the Half Scholarship.
