Make it move with purpose.

Tasks are designed to help you to get to grips with some of the initial set-up they will require to confidently get stuck in on the first day of the course. Tasks include:

• Signing up to & familiarising themselves with Canvas, our learning platform
• Adobe After Effects orientation and set-up follow-alongs
• Watching videos & completing short exercises that take them through using Zoom, Google Drive, Slack, Figma & managing the Shillington supplied toolkits

• In-depth program coverage for After Effects from the basics to more advanced skills that are required to perform tasks to industry standards
• Developing an understanding of how to extract the brand essence of a project before deciding what kind of motion should be created to bring it to life in the most suitable way
• Training the design eye for Motion-based inspiration through a series of out-of class hours tasks
• Converting Photoshop or Illustrator design files to be suitable for motion
• Following the process from Idea Generation, storyboarding, style frames and blocking out
• Handling supplied footage & being creative with it
• Understanding how final assets should be supplied, using the help of Adobe Media Encoder

Develops on the skills learned in Motion Foundations and allows you to apply it to more complicated demos, exercises and briefs. You'll also prepare for the work for your major project.

• Maximise the efficiency of the working file, pre-renders and final exports

Focus will be now be each of your major project deliverables — bringing a portfolio project to life with the new skills they have acquired. There will be opportunities for additional skills to be taught depending on the directions of each of the project, as well as plenty of scheduled deliveries.

• Bringing a pre-approved portfolio project to life through careful planning and motion-based strategy
• Utilising a wider range of motion-skills to put into practice what the course has covered
• Working closely with teachers for support and problem solving
• Sharing work with a study group for peer to peer feedback, appreciation & knowledge sharing

Classes run twice a week (Tuesday and Wednesday) from 6:30–9:30pm for 12 weeks. Light tasks may be assigned for Friday, with feedback provided before the weekend.

Recent graduates (Shillington Graphic Design or similar) or industry professionals seeking to animate their projects. An up-to-date portfolio is required for bringing your work to life, especially for the final project. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) is necessary. No prior After Effects experience needed; the course covers it from the ground up. Last of all—Figma will be used, but onboarding will be provided.

Classes include live lectures, demonstrations, and practical exercises. Expect the Shillington way of doing things from the first class—hands-on teacher support, critiques, 1-on-1 progress chats, and final project proposal preparation. Active participation is crucial, with opportunities to present ideas, research, and engage in group tasks.

A computer capable of running After Effects and a reliable internet connection. Teachers will use Macs, but Windows support is available. Access to Adobe After Effects through Creative Cloud, with the latest version recommended.

A certificate of completion for those who fulfil all course requirements. Comprehensive understanding of motion design, proficiency in After Effects, and an industry-standard case study showcasing your animated portfolio piece with a detailed process component.

Not only will you understand the tools and how to create motion assets—but also a level of understanding of how the industry communicate ideas around the subject of motion both on and off screen.
