I had a great teacher that got me excited about design and I’d like to do the same for anyone else who has come to get their design itch scratched!

Simon has worked as a freelance designer and illustrator since completing the full-time course at Shillington in 2018. Simon’s experience as a freelancer has involved at most of the big agencies in Sydney, as well as smaller boutique agencies, and in-house for companies including City of Sydney Council and SBS.
Simon is passionate about illustration and draws inspiration from pop surrealist artists, classic cartoons and pop culture. His preference is to work with emerging businesses and creative-focussed clients, as he finds this allows for greater freedom of expression.
What do you love about design?
I love that design is whatever you want it to be. There’s so much you can do with it and find a way to express yourself through your work.
Why do you teach?
I had a great teacher that got me excited about design and I’d like to do the same for anyone else who has come to get their design itch scratched!
Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.
Outside of Shillington I can be found most days of the week holed up in my pixel dungeon in Erskineville. I do a lot of sketching, mostly of sausage-shaped whimsical characters, and I love working on any project that will go in to production.
What or who are you loving right now?
I really love the work of a NY-based designer named Braulio Amado. I love the OHNO type foundry, Kern Club, and I will always love decayed hand-painted shop signage from past generations.
If you were a typeface, what would you be?
Cooper Black
What’s your favourite blog?
I spend way too much time on online forums dedicated to my 1984 Mazda 323 Panel Van.
It’s not really a design blog… Well it is in a way.
