I love design for its immeasurable impact in the world.

Graphic Design Teacher

Hilary Archer

Originally from Canada, Hilary Archer has been working as an independent designer in New York and London for the past 9 years. Predominantly working in branding, art direction and environmental design, Hilary has worked with brands and studios of all sizes and now runs design and education collective Twenty Assembly. She loves being kept on her toes through teaching and helping others to grow and develop creatively.

What do you love about design?

I love design for it’s immeasurable impact in the world. It is visual communication that changes the way we live and touches everything we see and do. I love design for it’s challenges—design is problem solving, collaborative, thought provoking and ultimately beautiful.

Why do you teach?

I teach design because not only is it tremendously rewarding to help another person discover their own passions and talents, it is inspiring and invigorating for my own design skills to guide design problem solving through 40 other sets of eyes!

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.

I began my career in marketing and advertising until moving into graphic design. I have worked predominately contract and freelance across both agency and brand. Now, outside Shillington, I run a small freelance studio specialising in art direction and brand communication for fashion and creative industries.

What or who are you loving right now?

I’m loving Hato studio at the moment. Their work explores multichannel design in an approach that transcends print, digital and environment and takes graphics into an experiential, collective and social space.

If you were a typeface, what would you be?
