What do you love about design?
I love the creative and iterative process of design that opens up unexpected directions to explore, as well as the process of making something that has a clear function.
Why do you teach?
Being in conversation with fresh perspectives that challenge my own is an enriching experience, and this is a key part of the day to day exchange with students. Being able to witness the growth of their thinking and skills is also deeply satisfying.
Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.
Outside of Shillington, I co-run a type studio Typeland. We design custom and retail typefaces and work on logotype and letterforms, with a focus on multi-script designs.
What or who are you loving right now?
David Jonathan Ross, Font of the Month Club, for a monthly source of new typefaces. Dinamo’s Font Gauntlet to test variable fonts, any tool or script that allows me to cut down repetitive tasks.
If you were a typeface, what would you be?
It depends on the day but mostly Estro, released by Nebiolo and designed by Aldo Novarese.
