Shrenik Ganatra

Shrenik Ganatra is a designer, originally from Mumbai, India but currently residing in Brooklyn, New York. His work is rooted in typography but branches out to incorporate a majority of design focuses. It has been acknowledged by Graphis Inc., The Type Directors Club, Creative Boom, AIGA Eye on Design, Adobe, HOW Design, The Design Kids, Typism, Communication Arts and The Art Directors Club. When Shrenik is not designing, he is busy working on projects for his shoegaze band, “Minaxi”.

What do you love about design?

I love design for its ability to evoke a certain feeling. I look at design pieces the way I look at music compositions; the former is visual while the latter is aural yet, to me, they provide for a similar sensory experience.

Why do you teach?

I teach because it brings me peace to share what I have learned in my career with people and help them in their journey. It’s even more fun to learn from my students in return as they all come from different backgrounds and have loads to share with us.

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.

Pretty much all of my time outside of Shillington is devoted to my music and its evolution. Having said that, I do design all of my band’s visuals. Furthermore, I have a tendency to pick up a personal typeface design project and forget about it for 6 years.

What or who are you loving right now?

Braulio Amado for his awesome, typography-driven gig posters.

Ninad Kale, Connor Davenport and Potch Auacherdkul for their typeface design work.

Nikita Prokhorov for his lettering.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Pankaj Tripathi and Emraan Hashmi for their contribution to Indian Cinema.

Jimmy Chamberlin for his god-like drumming prowess!

If you were a typeface, what would you be?

Wingdings, baby!

What’s your favourite blog?

A few: Creative Boom, It’s Nice That, TDC and AIGA Eye on Design.
