Learn from designers with industry expertise.

I believe if everyone was taught design thinking in school, the world would probably be a much better place.

Spencer Harrison

Spencer Harrison is a designer, artist and all-round creative guy. In his multi-disciplinary practice he has been lucky enough to work with the likes of Miami Horror, David Jones, Milligram, Google and many more, producing colour abstract designs to brighten peoples days. Alongside client projects he has an arts practice, exhibiting paintings and sculptural works around Australia. When not busy in the studio he is passionate about teaching design at Shillington, helping people realise the creative side that lies inside us all.

What do you love about design?

I love the possibilities that design opens up in your life. Design is about so much more than making something look beautiful (although that is also important) but the skills it gives you in creativity and problems solving can be used in all areas of your life. I believe if everyone was taught design thinking in school, the world would probably be a much better place.

Why do you teach?

I love to teach as it’s amazing to see the impact you can make on someone’s life by helping them rediscover their creative side and hopefully make a career out of it also! It’s also a lot of fun to get to know the students throughout the year and see their personalities shine through their work!

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.

When not teaching I’m usually in my studio working on self directed art project or commissions for clients. My commissioned work usually consists of illustrations or pattern design for homewares, clothing and interiors.

What or who are you loving right now?

I’m digging anything full of patterns or colours right now. Lately I’ve been looking to a lot of artists from the past for inspiration, looking at the work of Joan Miro, Matisse, Picasso and David Hockney.

If you were a typeface what would you be?

I’d have to say Brandon Text. Modern and clean but still warm and friendly.

What’s your favourite blog?

Sight Unseen because they are really capturing the pattern and colour vibe I’m into at the moment. I love that they post architecture, furniture, art and objects as I I like to get a lot of inspiration looking at areas outside of just graphic design.
