Sydney Ligouri

Sydney Ligouri is a designer, illustrator, and entrepreneur with a passion for education. She received her BFA in Illustration from Parsons The New School for Design. Sydney has worked in a variety of design environments from boutique branding agencies, to start-ups, to in-house at global corporations. She is also the co-founder of two of her own start-ups: RookieUp and Letterly. Sydney has been in New York for over ten years and spends her free time getting involved in the local Burning Man arts community.

What do you love about design?

Design provides a logical method for solving visual problems in storytelling, digital experiences, and analog experiences, while also allowing for experimentation, discovery, and play. Plus, it’s fun!

Why do you teach?

Witnessing the journey our students go on over the course of three or nine months is SO inspiring, sharing knowledge is deeply humbling, and the diversity of thought and expression any given class can produce is so damn cool. Plus, I feel like I’m contributing to something seriously good in the world.

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.

I studied illustration at Parsons, and that time was very cool because it provided me an opportunity to experiment with lots of different mediums and also helped me channel my very visual way of thinking into tangible stuff—drawings, paintings, sculptures, clothing, etc.

After graduation I was determined to stay in New York so I pulled together a scrappy design portfolio and landed a job at a small boutique branding agency where I learned just about everything on the job. It was thrilling and simultaneously terrifying, flying by the seat of my pants.

Subsequently I went on to work at a small tech start-up, a publishing house (Scholastic), and also dabbled in freelance. So I wound up with a hodgepodge of experience, which kind of suits me because I really love variety.

I’ve also co-founded two of my own startups: Letterly, which was a hand-written letter delivery service, and RookieUp, an online mentorship platform connecting aspiring creatives with experienced mentors for 1-on-1 video chats.

What or who are you loving right now?

I am absolutely loving interior design at the moment—I binge loads of Architectural Digest’s ‘Open Door’ series on YouTube!

If you were a typeface, what would you be?

DM Serif Display. Bold and confident yet soft around the edges, with a quirky flair.

What’s your favourite blog?

Currently loving Made by Folk.
