I teach because if I can give that same opportunity to just one student, it will be worth it.

New York

Sam Jacobs

Sam Jacobs is a New Yorker through and through. Having grown up just outside the city, when it came time to decide where to work, New York was a no brainer. Sam, a former Shillington student himself, has worked in Pharmaceutical Advertising as an Art Director for Ogilvy, in Publishing as a Senior Designer for Time Inc designing the Travel + Leisure Magazine, and currently as the Director of Design for Pip’s Island, the first immersive theatrical experience for families. He has a passion for storytelling, helping small brands sprout and watching them grow over time. Ever since he graduated he knew wanted to “Fly Home” and is beyond proud to be teaching the next round of future designers at Shillington.

What do you love about design?

The ability to change people’s perspectives in an instant. A well-executed design can stop people in their tracks. That aha moment is surreal.

Why do you teach?

I know what Shillington can do to a person’s life; I would not be where I am today if not for studying at Shillington. I teach because if I can give that same opportunity to just one student, it will be worth it.

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.

I am a bit of a design nomad, having previously worked in Advertising at Ogilvy, in print for Time Inc. designing the Travel + Leisure/Departures magazines, and now running the visual design for Pip’s Island, New York’s First Immersive Family Adventure.

What or who are you loving right now?

I absolutely love this brand redesign for Crocs by Stephen Kelleher. He managed to strip away anything and everything that was not essential and came to this simple solution.

If you were a typeface, what would you be?

I think I would be Brandon, big and bold and yet when you look closely, soft around the edges, much like my favorite Disney character, Grumpy.

What’s your favourite blog?

FastCo.design—I think it is important to be inspired by all things design, not just graphics.
