Graphic Design Teacher
New York

Kym Rohman

Kym Rohman is a Brooklyn-based graphic designer. She started her design career working on web and digital design, evolving into a design director working in print and marketing design. She has worked in-house at the Jewish Museum and the Clinton Foundation and on the agency side at Weber Shandwick, working with clients like Aetna and Unilever USA. In her free time, she works as a freelance graphic designer with various non-profits. She is also a yogi who loves doodling on her iPad, drawing floral patterns and biking to breweries in NYC.

What do you love about design?

I love design because it challenges me to care about my work and to engage with the world around me. Design is everywhere! It feels amazing to create something you’re proud of and see it out in the world.

Why do you teach?

I teach because we are all creative, we just need the tools to find that creativity within ourselves, using process and inspiration as our guides. Knowing design principles has impacted everything I do and I love watching the confidence of students grow as they learn, experiment and start discovering what they like.

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.

I started my big New York career working in music licensing at the Harry Fox Agency and MTV. It took working with other creatives to realize I wanted to go back to school for design, so in 2009 I enrolled at Parsons. Since then I’ve done client work within small studios and large agencies like Weber Shandwick. I love working within the arts and non-profit worlds, having worked with The Jewish Museum and The Clinton Foundation as an in-house designer and also freelance.

What or who are you loving right now?

I’m really into fine art and street art at the moment! My drawing skills are currently going back to school so I’ve been inspired by having more art in my Instagram feed. Some favorites: Alex Garnet, Drew Merritt, Thomas Campbell, Paul Jackson. And I have to shout out to my favorite tattoo artists, Victor Webster and Rachel Hauer.

If you were a typeface, what would you be?

Oof, wow, how to choose. I would be a modern typeface that comes in super slim and super chunky weights. I love the contrast.

What’s your favourite blog?

The blogiest thing I follow is Maria Popova’s Brain Pickings, I love learning about other people and she has a way of summarizing brilliant people. Meanwhile, I’ve taken the obsession with other people to newsletters. Here are a few I love: The Red Hand Files (wise life advice from Nick Cave), Why is this Interesting, Haley Nahman’s Maybe Baby and Edith Zimmerman for daily doodles.
