As a past student of Shillington I always knew I wanted to return to the classroom as a teacher. I truly believe everyone is creative and I love that design gives you the keys to creatively express yourself – both professionally and personally!

Kim Melvin is a Melbourne-based Art Director and Graphic Designer. Kicking off her career as an Art Director at Grey Melbourne, Kim worked across a diverse range of clients including Volvo, Gillette, Herbal Essence, and TAC. Obsessed with the big ideas of Advertising, but frustrated with her lack of design knowledge, Kim enrolled in the part-time Shillington course. Kim enjoyed her Shillington journey so much she’s returned to the classroom as a teacher, and looks forward to assisting students on their journeys to an exciting creative career.
What do you love about design?
I love creative problem solving and every stage of design! There’s no better feeling than cracking a brief and working with a client or team to create something that is both beautiful and useful.

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.
I originally started out as an Art Director in Advertising. I quickly realised I was constantly floating over to the Designers and after annoying them with one million questions one of them suggested I check out Shillington. After studying part-time at Shillington I’ve worked in large advertising agencies, design studios, start-ups and have freelanced on the side.
What or who are you loving right now?
I have always loved Toiletpaper. The art direction, playful imagery, bright colours and silliness has always caught my eye.
If you were a typeface, what would you be?
At the moment I would be Buenos Aires.
