I love the design thinking and problem solving side of it, but more importantly the ability to tell a story visually. And I love seeing the variety of visual styles that other designers come up with, so inspiring!

Heather Walker
Heather Walker has worked as a graphic and digital designer for roughly the last 8 years and has worked for a variety of clients, ranging from a certain major supermarket and a government infrastructure arts project, right down to a local Melbourne craft brewery and other small businesses. She has worked for advertising and marketing agencies, including Big Red and Keep Left, as well as working at local design studio and font foundry Letterbox, in-house for other retail brands and freelance work.
Her big passion however is typography, she loves to delve into font making and other letterform-based projects, and getting involved with local lettering groups and exhibitions. If a project calls for it, she won’t hesitate to break out the calligraphy pens and uses this as a starting point for much of her design work. Her design style makes use of bold contrast, bright colours, strong geometry and is fun and graphical.
What do you love about design?
I love the design thinking and problem solving side of it, but more importantly the ability to tell a story visually. And I love seeing the variety of visual styles that other designers come up with, so inspiring!
Why do you enjoy working in design education?
Helping others is really important to me, and I felt that teaching would be a nice way to give back, and aiding young designers feels super rewarding.
Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.
It’s taken me a long time to get here! I went to Curtin University in Perth where I studied multimedia design, I had a few jobs there but actually I found the design scene in Perth was quite challenging to break in to. So I moved to Melbourne to study again, this time a Diploma at CATC to skill up and really build my design network.
I interned and freelanced for quite a long time, worked in house for a clothing brand, before finally landing a BIG job with ad agency Big Red, where I worked mostly for Coles (yep, lots of Down Down ads!). More recently I’ve worked for local craft brewery Moon Dog marketing and PR agency Keep Left, and some exciting freelance work for the Melbourne Metro Tunnel project.
What keeps you busy outside of Shillington?
Cycling around Melbourne, and trying not to kill my houseplants!
What or who are you loving right now?
Always obsessed with Friends of Type, I have their postcard set and love to flick through it for some inspo.
If you were a typeface, what would you be?
I actually designed my own recently! It’s called Clifton, named after Clifton Hill which is where I was living at the time. It’s based on blackletter calligraphy and it’s very ME.
What’s your favourite blog?
Absolutely covet The Design Files blog for the mix of design, art and interiors.
