What better place to study design than New York City, where inspiration is constantly in the air, in your face and on your subway home?! I was on an M1 vocational student visa, Shillington make it super easy to help process this.
Communications Specialist, The University of Melbourne
Angeline Chan
What were you doing before Shillington?
I was working as a Communications Consultant at the University of Melbourne, doing improvised comedy and painting.
Why did you decide to study design? Why Shillington?
I started an online store selling my artwork on t-shirts and bags and thought studying graphic design would give me more tools in my kit especially the theoretical aspect of design. I also wanted to upskill in my day job as Communications professional. I think learning Creative Suite as a creative is essential and a no brainer too.
I loved the idea of studying for three months, I had a good feeling about Shillington after going to an info session, one of the grad exhibitions and getting advice from a friend who is a Shillumni. Ironically their website design and vibes Shillington gave off resonated with me too!
You moved to NYC to do the course. Why did you study abroad? What visa were you on?
I’ve been in Melbourne for the last ten years and laid some creative eggs here, so I wanted to surround myself in a new stimulating environment. I had been to NYC in 2016 and felt that unapologetic creative spirit that city is built on. What better place to study design where inspiration is constantly in the air, in your face and on your subway home?! I was on an M1 vocational student visa, Shillington make it super easy to help process this.
What’s your top tip for design students?
Don’t be afraid to experiment and stuff up—try break Photoshop or Illustrator, that is what class is for! If you’re uncomfortable with idea generation or a particular stage of design, hang in there and keep pushing yourself. Use your classmates to bounce ideas and their feedback throughout the course, I found it so valuable and often would allow my designs to go to that next level.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I was astounded at the learning curve experienced throughout the three months and specifically during portfolio. It’s crazy what you can achieve and how much your design eye evolves over the course of three months! You can follow my design adventures on @angechanart.
