To be honest, I wouldn’t teach just anywhere—it’s the Shillington approach that I love.
Graphic Design Teacher
A sun-chaser born in California and now living in Queensland. Brisbane teacher Tia Queen co-founded award-winning design studio Gangplank where she works closely with company leaders to invigorate their brand. Outside of the studio, Tia teaches design at Shillington, where she enjoys helping people push beyond their comfort zone and master new skills. Tia’s also an Assisterhood mentor and previous Chair of AGDA Queensland.
What do you love about design?
Design for me is an opportunity to find the best solution for a problem and to transform an idea into something that’s both functional and lovable! I enjoy the biggest challenge of design: distilling complex ideas into their most simple and honest form.
Why do you teach?
To be honest, I wouldn’t teach just anywhere—it’s the Shillington approach that I love. We operate the classroom like a design studio, focusing on positive culture, design thinking and the most up to date technical skills to our industry. I love the challenge of showing people where to look—not how to see—in order to bring out their individual best. I also love being surrounded by passionate and talented junior designers (my students) and some of the best senior designers and art directors (my colleagues).
Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.
Outside of Shillington I run a small business as a freelance Senior Designer / Art Director. I’m also Vice Chair of the AGDA Queensland branch, where my mission is to engage, connect, celebrate and grow the Queensland design community.
What or who are you loving right now?
I can’t get enough of the local design community! Everywhere I look someone is doing something creative and inspiring—be it out in the open or behind the scenes—and I love getting to know their stories.
If you were a typeface what would you be?
Wingdings. They’re silly ☺, honest ☜, and kind ♡… but nevertheless a dingbat ◕‿◕.
