I love to draw the best from people and create environments where students are at ease.

What do you love about design?

I read a quote a while back (it was probably on Oprah actually, or maybe I made it up, I’m kind of smart) that said, “Do things that make ten-year-old you proud.” I love design because the kid inside of me, that is still mentally ten years old, gets to create and draw all day, with my tongue half poking out, for institutions and companies I love. I get paid to be a big kid, that’s kinda awesome.

Why do you teach?

I love to draw the best from people and create environments where students are at ease. Design should be fun, it’s creative and we should be drawing from imagination and freedom when we create. I love that I get to command an environment where students can fail, learn, try again, and succeed. It’s incredibly cool to see someone so proud of what they’ve designed!

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.

Outside of Shillo I’ve worked for a lot of the major arts institutions in Sydney, including the Sydney Opera House, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Australian Museum. I’ve fallen into a career in marketing and exhibition design, but I’m currently shifting gears to get into travel design. Wish me luck.

What or who are you loving right now?

I’m always obsessed with illustrators and print, so I love design where these things meet. I buy magazines like crazy, as well as kids books and movie concept art books. I’ll always love Charlie Harper, but current obsession is Japanese illustrator Satoshi Hashimoto, who does a lot of work for Monocle mag (other obsession). Apart from that, I’m crazy about well-designed travel sites, most recently On the Grid, which combines local guides and the most beautiful grid/icon design.

If you were a typeface, what would you be?

Gotham Bold. Come at me design snobs.

What’s your favourite blog?

I read movie blogs. When I’m looking at design I’m usually following a rabbit hole of leads from illustrators, magazine websites, links from Pinterest (my bad) or Behance or something I’ve stumbled upon on Dribble.
