Design is all about understanding people and being empathetic towards them and other things you might have otherwise known nothing about.

What do you love about design?
Design is all about understanding people and being empathetic towards them and other things you might have otherwise known nothing about. It keeps me on my toes and approaching everything in life AND design with an open and critical mind.
Why do you teach?
I spend everyday in a room with a group of people of all ages from all over the world. Some have left jobs they were unhappy with. Some have always known design was what they wanted to do. Everyone is always so different and may otherwise have never come into contact with each other, however they all share one common interest, to become a Graphic Designer. I get to help them on their journey.
Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.
I spent a few years working as a freelance Illustrator and Graphic Designer for start up companies in Edinburgh, Scotland. I was looking to up-skill and discover some better opportunities and discovered Shillington College. After graduating from Shillington Sydney I was able to land a couple of fantastic internships in some large agencies. The second internship found me a junior position at Frost*Collective Sydney where I learnt a huge amount and became the designer I am today.
What or who are you loving right now?
I’m a huge fan of the work that comes out of Hey Studio in Barcelona. They have a real knack for breathing so much vibrancy and life into their work even if to others a brief may have appeared a little dry and corporate they find a way to create eye catching and beautiful work that feels optimistic and full of life.
I also recently saw an amazing campaign by London based studio MullenLowe, the “We listen” campaign funded by Network Rail for the Samaritans. A beautifully art directed and thought provoking campaign which successfully shifts the viewers perceptions and raises awareness about a very real and important issue. Basically everything I love about graphic design all in one case study. Check it out!
