Learn from designers with industry expertise.

I love that learning is woven into the design process, and that problem solving can take so many different forms.

Jamie Lawson

Jamie Lawson is a Canadian artist, designer and musician based in Hamilton, Ontario. He briefly attended university for Fine Art, but his design career began by accident at a small suburban studio, where he discovered a latent inclination toward design-y things. Before moving on to form his own studio, Jamie worked on countless projects for the wine and beverage industry, where he honed his skills. Currently Jamie runs his own graphic design practice Poly Studio, as well as Vermillion Sands, a creative collaboration with his wife, illustrator Jacqui Oakley.

What do you love about design?

I love that design encompasses so many disciplines, approaches and objectives. I love that learning is woven into the process, and that problem solving can take so many different forms.

Why do you teach?

I’ve been so fortunate to have had some amazingly inspiring and influential teachers throughout my life; people who helped open up the world, who believed in me and helped foster my imagination. I love having the opportunity to try to return the favour and pass along the things I’ve learned.

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.

I really like to focus on projects where design and art intersect publicly. This approach leads to everything from large art commissions for architecture clients, to catalogue design for art galleries. I trade under the name Poly Studio, where I also create a variety of design work including branding, books and packaging. I also run Vermillion Sands with my wife, illustrator Jacqui Oakley. Together we produce illustrations, murals and fine art projects.

What or who are you loving right now?

I have eternal love for UK record label Ghost Box, run by graphic designer Julian House and producer Jim Jupp. The music, artwork and design are all imaginative, evocative and brilliant.

If you were a typeface, what would you be?

On my best day I’m Albertus Nova. The rest of the time I’m probably Davida.
