I love walking into a store, seeing something I designed and no one knowing it was me.
Graphic Design Teacher
Deepa Shanbhag is a graphic designer, business owner and a teacher on the New York team. She has worked primarily in-house with notable fashion brands (like LOFT, White House Black Market, Tommy Hilfiger, Victoria’s Secret and J. Crew) to help market their collections via print or through digital platforms. She loves to teach because she enjoys giving someone the tools to help them communicate what’s in their imagination.
What do you love about design?
I love the endless possibilities and the need for something that is considered, by some, a frivolous field. There’s this great quote by Chip Kidd, “Everything that is not made by nature is designed by someone.” Although he’s not referring exclusively to graphic design, I like to use it when someone tells me that they thought about majoring in graphic design—before they decided it was “just a hobby”.
Why do you teach?
I want to be able to give someone the tools to help them communicate what’s in their imagination.
Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.
I’ve mostly worked in fashion. After graduation I thought I’d end up at magazines, then I crash landed in marketing. I’ve worked with various brands (LOFT, White House Black Market, Tommy Hilfiger and Victoria’s Secret) to help market their collections, via print or through digital platforms. I also run my own business, TCTLE, which I design for, but isn’t based around graphic design.
What or who are you loving right now?
I’m really intrigued by the Virgil Abloh/Louis Vuitton partnership and seeing how that continues to evolve.
If you were a typeface, what would you be?
A Buzzfeed quiz revealed I’m Helvetica because, and I quote, “[I’m] a study in contrasts—noticeable because of [my] unnoticeability, skinny but curvy, the supreme overlord of any room without having to say a word.” Gives me something to aspire to—ha!
What’s your favourite blog?
I don’t have one. I end up finding a lot of interesting things through the people I follow on Instagram and Twitter.
