I love design’s ability to provoke, immerse, entice, challenge and engage. Creating awareness or initiating change with the audience. First things first!
Why do you teach?
Sharing my passion. I enjoy being hungry… always learning! I love seeing that the classroom. Being challenged, asking questions, pushing beyond the expected—that moment someone realises THEY ARE a designer.
Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.
Outside teaching with Shillington I run 313RGB with two friends. We are a multidisciplinary partnership that creates real-time immersive experiences which combines art direction, production design and A/V based performance. I also curate events such as Sound to Light, the last one being commissioned by MONA for Dark Mofo and presenting/collaborating with iconic UK studio The Designers Republic™ on Up Over Down Under™, so always trying to keep my fingers in a few pies.
What or who are you loving right now?
I’ve always have a massive soft spot for individuals and studios who combine and push technologies in their practice—Jürg Lehni, Monkier, UVA, Field, Lust and Party.
If you were a typeface what would it be?
Something Extra Black Extended—Maybe Univers 93.
What’s your favourite blog?
I don’t have a favourite site, but if so, it would be a mix between—VVatch, Rhizome, Prosthetic Knowledge, Grafik and Creative Applications.
