Learn from designers with industry expertise.

There’s something lovely about sharing knowledge or skill and seeing someone take that knowledge and make it their own, building on what you have given them and creating something new.

What do you love about design?

Design is this amazing thing that exists in so many forms. It’s a thing we do, it’s a way of thinking, it’s a solution to a problem, it can capture a concept or a feeling. It can bring order or it can create chaos and I just love that complexity about it. Mostly I think I love how it can shape the world around us, I mean every object we have ever owned, every book we have read or item of clothing we have worn has been designed. Design is everywhere!

Why do you enjoy working in design education?

I have always loved passing on things I’m passionate about. There’s something lovely about sharing knowledge or skill and seeing someone take that knowledge and make it their own, building on what you have given them and creating something new. I want to see people inspired and motivated!

What keeps you busy outside of Shillington?

I LOVE being busy and active! If I’m not designing or teaching I can be found at the gym or on a walk, or pottering about with my plants, or trying to develop a new skill somewhere. I’m working on a new typeface and trying to get my motorbike up and running. I’m usually training for a challenge, last year was a triathlon, this year I’m still looking for something to take on but I’m aiming to beat my Deadlift PR by April!

What or who are you loving right now?

I’ve recently found DCS which is a great resource for inspiration. I’ve got an endless love affair with DIA but I’ve been a long time fan of Matt Willey and Ben Grandgenett. But to be honest I could probably list a million studios/designers/foundries here!

If you were a typeface, what would you be?

A difficult question for someone as obsessed with type as I am, but—I would say Caslon. Caslon is a really interesting typeface (one of the oldest British typefaces from the 1600s) that I have always felt an affinity with. I’m quintessentially British I guess??

What’s your favourite blog?

Agh, too many choices! I like TypeRoom and, of course, The Brand Identity
