Just do it! I would definitely recommend Shillington. You don’t need any experience going in and you come out with an awesome portfolio.
Lead Graphic Designer, Dermalogica
Rawin Keo
What were you up to before Shillington?
A year and a half before enrolling into Shillington, I was finishing up my last semester of Uni, studying a B. Commerce (Accounting) with a B. Science (Human Bio). During that time, an opportunity came up for a social media intern at Dermalogica Australia and I knew I had to do it. I was already committed to graduating and following a career in science, so I knew this was my last creative opportunity before diving into research labs. After a month, my internship ended, and I was fortunate enough to be offered a job as Content Producer, responsible for social media and graphic design. This was when my career path took a turn.
Why did you decide to study design?
I was learning design on the job, attending one-day workshops, watching online tutorials and googling everything. And although I was delivering everything to standard, it didn’t feel right calling myself a ‘designer’. I had no mentor who could critique my work and tell me whether or not I was doing things the ‘right’ way. I needed a course that could set the foundations and allow me to upskill in a short amount of time. With Shillington’s great reputation and the option to study part-time, I knew this was the place. I was also excited to hear how practical the course is, which is how I like to learn and absorb content.
What do you love about being a designer?
I love that design is same, same, but different, which means it never gets boring. Every project is unique; therefore, the design process is different, and I enjoy working both independently and collaboratively towards a solution. It’s hard work and can be challenging and (very) stressful at times, but seeing the results make it all so worth it. Plus, I really enjoy getting to meet and collab with other creatives in the industry.
What’s your typical day like at Dermalogica?
Besides the three coffees a day, I manage the design workflow on a day-to-day, design and deliver marketing materials (both print and digital) for all channels across the company. There’ll be meetings with the internal team to discuss briefs and present mock-ups, or with external suppliers to manage projects from start to finish. Some days are a little more exciting than others and I’ll get the opportunity to collaborate with external creatives to produce and art direct commercial photo/video shoots to align with Dermalogica’s innovations and monthly promotions.
What would you say to someone thinking of changing careers at Shillington?
Just do it! I would definitely recommend Shillington. You don’t need any experience going in and you come out with an awesome portfolio. Also, the practical and fast-paced environment was like no other educational institution I’ve experienced, and this definitely prepares you for the real world. Shillington didn’t just teach me technical skills, but also practical skills and an understanding of the design process, which are all equally important for a designer.
