I would 200% recommend it. There is just no other school like it, and it is worth more than the money!
Regional Creative Director, The Great Room
What were you up to before Shillington?
I was a production manager at an agency in Hawaii
Why did you decide to study design? Why Shillington?
I was producing shopping guides and videos, working with a lot of design agencies and was art directing the work before it got sent to the client. I wanted to close the gap and actually do the design instead of producing. I initially enrolled into a different design course in London, but first day in I knew it wasn’t for me. I quickly found Shillington, and moved across the pond and on day 1, I KNEW I had made the right choice. It was more than just a design course. The learning approach was fresh, real life studio time and briefs, the teachers were amazing, and I really felt like I was immersed into the real world of design. There is not other school like it.
You graduated in 2012. Where has life taken you since then?
I landed a few short term jobs at names like Oxford University Press, Redcats USA, until I got my break at The Associated Press as a senior designer on the in-house brand team, seeing the organisation through its first ever rebrand. It was an incredible experience! I then moved to Singapore and worked as an art director at a publishing house working on books in the culinary, travel, and arts spaces and then to an agency as a creative director working with lifestyle brands.
Tell us about a recent professional project.
A recent project is a video campaign for social media to change public perception of hot desks. It’s still in production, but it’s going to be a very unique angle on product videos. Way more interesting, really awesome story.
What’s the best thing about working as a creative in Singapore?
Singapore is no longer an emerging market—it has ARRIVED. Loads of inspiration, and is the eye of the region in terms of innovation, tech, and talent. Anyone who is a creative in Singapore is going to be exposed to so many brands, experiences, and interesting people.
Would you recommend other aspiring designers in Singapore consider studying abroad at Shillington in New York, the UK or Australia?
I would 200% recommend it. There is just no other school like it, and it is worth more than the money! You enter not having any experience, and leave with a stunning portfolio and ready to take on any creative environment.
Who were your Shillington teachers and what were the biggest lessons they taught you?
Holly Karlsson and Matt Hocking. They taught me the true importance of a simple concept called white space.
