Hear straight from our graduates.
Straight after I graduated I got to work cold contacting agencies around Melbourne by simply sending my folio around. After a week of emails I had 12 meetings scheduled with different studios and agencies.
UX/UI & Content Designer, Ignite Online
What were you up to before Shillington?
I studied Psychology and Marketing at uni, and straight after graduating I worked in editorial writing and content production. I interned at a food magazine in Ireland before coming back to Australia to work for a publishing agency—writing, photographing and producing content for tourism and fashion publications. Being in an agency, I saw what the designers were doing and always felt creatively stilted not being able to create things the way they did! After a couple of years in roles like this I felt like I needed a change so I booked a ticket to Mexico for a month trip and when I came back I moved to Melbourne from Adelaide and jumped straight into Shillington full-time.
Why did you want to study design? Why Shillington?
Graphic design was always something I was really interested in, and I had always wish I had studied it at uni. I’d seen Shillington advertised around the place but it took me really feeling like I needed a change to seriously consider doing it. The idea of spending 3 years studying an undergraduate degree just wasn’t an option for me, especially because I had already worked in the industry for a few years. I love learning new things and studying them intensively, so the 3-month full time option at Shillington seemed perfect for my learning style.
What happened after you graduated? Where are you now?
Straight after I graduated I got to work cold contacting agencies around Melbourne by simply sending my folio around. After a week of emails I had 12 meetings scheduled with different studios and agencies. It turns out the very first interview I went to at Ignite Online was the job I went for. They didn’t have any vacancies but agreed to meet and created a role for me. I’ve been working at Ignite across UX, UI and content design for a year and a half now and it’s been a great experience. Everyday there’s a new, exciting and challenging project to tackle and being a small studio I get to do a lot.
What would you say to someone thinking of studying at Shillington?
If you’re the kind of person that likes to immerse yourself completely in what you’re passionate about, it’s the best thing you’ll ever do. It’s an intense experience, but you’ll be surrounded by like-minded people and so much inspiration that you’ll be sad when it’s over! Also I’d say that you get out as much as you put in. It’s easy to get dejected that your work doesn’t yet look like the work of the best studios, but you have to remind yourself that it all comes with time and to trust the process.
