One of the best things I learnt at Shillington is that the best idea is the next idea and to never stop creating.

What were you up to before Shillington?
I have previously studied photography, practiced as a visual artist and worked in printing, although none of those fields were the right fit for me. I went travelling Europe and Asia for ten months and when I came back I decided to try creating a career that really utilises my interests and allows me to develop new creative skills. So starting at Shillington seemed like the perfect idea.
Why did you decide to study design full-time?
The full-time program worked best for me because I was at a stage in life where I was eager to completely throw myself into something new and challenging. I was very happy to be totally consumed by learning about design. I love the intensity of that approach and really enjoyed getting to go to Shillington five days a week.
What’s your typical day like as a designer?
I usually get briefed on my part of the project in the morning and then work on it, referring to my creative director and senior designers for review. I work on everything from icon design to annual reports to campaign posters. I love that working in advertising is fast paced and that I get to work on lots of different projects. I get work thrown my way throughout the day too so I’ve learned to be good at budgeting time.
What would you say to someone who is skeptical about Shillington?
There’s no need to be skeptical! Dive straight in, give it 100% of your effort and you’ll get so much back in return. You’ll get to learn from designers who have incredible experience and who will help you get started in the industry. I can’t recommend it enough, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Anything else you’d like to share?
One of the best things I learnt at Shillington is that the best idea is the next idea and to never stop creating. Even if it’s ‘finished’, you could always make it better. It’s an idea that has served me well in design and life in general.
