Hear straight from our graduates.

I didn’t have the patience to go back to studying 2+ years at University. Shillington offered a fast track alternative.

Senior Designer, eBay

Bianca Chu

What were you up to before Shillington? Why did you decide to study design at Shillington in 2010?

Before Shillington I was working in hospitality. I was always a visual person growing up but really found my calling when I was studying Advertising at TAFE. I felt I had more interest in the art direction/creative side of things and knew I had to have the design basics covered.

I chose Shillington because I knew I didn’t have the patience to go back to studying 2+ years at University and Shillington offered a fast track alternative. I could complete the course in just 3 months. Shillington taught me the design fundamentals along with the necessary programs you need to be a designer. I didn’t have a big class so we moved quick. It was intense but prepared me for the real world.

You’ve built an amazing creative career since graduating back in 2011. Tell us more.

Interning at IdN in Hong Kong was great. Being new I really got to see how the other designers work and slowly realised that the design process can really be a labour of love.

Working at Urban Walkabout was also a great experience, I got to work on both print and digital (which I was lacking). It was challenging to start with being still being a junior and the sole designer but it really gave me a kick to work even harder.

I then moved to Satuma, a small creative studio in Surry Hills. I got to with clients such as Harbour Trust and eBay and executing on seasonal campaigns—something I had not done before. Working at Satsuma taught me how important it is to manage client expectations. We were a small studio so being realistic and not over promise was really important.

What was your interview process like for the role at eBay? What’s your typical day like now, and who’s on your team? Give us an inside look!

Lucky for me I didn’t have to interview. Since I was already working on the eBay account at the agency, I developed a great network of colleagues within eBay so when I got asked to come in-house it felt pretty natural—that being said, it’s important to make a good impression for the company you work for, you never know who you will be working with.

My typical day consist of emails, meetings and designing and reviewing all the Advertising creative on the platform to ensure they align with the eBay brand. I work with a team of 5 amazing designers. We have similar to different skills so it’s great when we come together and brainstorm.

What would you say to someone who’s thinking about studying at Shillington?

Do your research and attend an Info Session. It was an intense 3 months for me but well worth it.
