I feel that having studied at Shillington has given me the skills required and prepared me for a career in the design industry.
Graphic Designer, Alfresco Emporium
What made you decide to enrol in the Shillington design course and how did it stand out from the rest?
I have always been interested in art and design and was ready for a career change. I wasn’t interested in a long university degree and wanted to find something that would fit around my lifestyle and still allow me to work. A friend mentioned Shillington to me and after some research and attending an open night I decided it was exactly what I was looking for. I loved seeing the amazing results that pass students had achieved in the short time frames and the innovative approach the college takes.
What was your biggest challenge during the course? Why?
Working full-time and studying part-time two nights a week and weekend classes was challenging, you certainly have to be focused on how you are going to organise yourself to enable to meet your deadlines with briefs and out of hours’ college work. Finding a balance is key.
What would you say to someone who is sceptical about the Shillington course?
With the course, you only get out what you put in and the college provides lots of resources to help you further your knowledge and learning experience.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting at Shillington, what would it be?
Have faith in yourself and trust the design process, the course is fast-paced and intense so it can be quite challenging at times. Listen to your teachers and stay open-minded to their feedback. Nine months is a short time to absorb as much as you can, listen to design podcasts and read books and above all practice as much as you can what you have learnt in class.
How has your experience been transitioning from a 12-year career working as a project event manager to a full-time designer?
Obviously, it is early days but I am certainly enjoying the change in my career path and have no regrets about doing the course. As I gain more experience I feel grateful that I have been able to get into the industry straight after graduating.
How did Shillington help you gain the relevant skills needed to succeed in your current role at the Australian retailer Alfresco Emporium?
Having studied at Shillington I was able to apply for the position at Alfresco Emporium due to the knowledge and training I received from my studies. The content covered in the course is up to date with industry standards and exposes you to the many opportunities that are ahead of you in this industry. My role is quite diverse with the management of a variety of digital and print design projects and product photography for the brand. I feel that having studied at Shillington has given me the skills required and prepared me for a career in the design industry.
