Carly Larsson
Carly Larsson is a Brooklyn-based illustrator and graphic designer with a BFA in Communications Design from Pratt Institute and an MFA in Illustration as Visual Essay from the School of Visual Arts. She’s worked across a range of industries with a diverse group of clients including adidas, Calypso St. Barth, droga5, HIAS, IDEO, Lincoln Center, MetLife, NeueHouse, Penske, SHEIN, Thompson Hotels, Wayfair, and more. In her spare time you might find her wandering around Brooklyn petting all the bodega cats, taking a dance class, or rollerskating. Carly discovered her love of teaching when she delivered her first guest lecture to a mentor’s class at Pratt in 2016. Since then, she has taught adjunct and led a number of workshops across the US. This led her to Shillington, where she is so excited to kick off a new chapter of full-time teaching!
What do you love about design?
I love creative problem solving and finding solutions that are both functional and aesthically pleasing. I particularly enjoy the ideation stage, when the possibilities are endless!
Why do you teach?
Getting to inspire and support other creatives on their journey is so rewarding.
Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.
I originally started out as an illustrator and have been freelancing since 2010. Since then I’ve blended my illustration and design practices and have had the opportunity to work on a variety of fun projects like textile design, murals, poster design, advertising, comics and zines, branding, editorial, etc.
What or who are you loving right now?
Lately I’ve had the song Boomerang by Yebba on repeat. Design-wise, I always love a trip to Printed Matter.
If you were a typeface, what would you be?
I’d be an inky hand-lettered script.
What’s your favourite blog?
Currently it’s a tough call between The Casual Optimist and Domino.
