What do you love about design?

Design is a social discipline, and designers can choose to involve diverse collaborators in their process, I find that super exciting. There is many different ways one can work as a designer, it can be a self initiated work, client work, commissioned work, which allows for a lot of freedom and choices.

Why do you teach?

There is nothing more inspiring that seeing people make progress and learn. I enjoy being a part of that process.

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.

I’ve worked as a designer in many different formats; working with and for friends, designing in a walk-in print shop, working for cultural institutions in an in-house design team, running my own studio, working as an art director in advertising, making images and brand identities, and developing creative strategies for companies. What I enjoy most doing at the moment is making images, that sometimes end up as editorial illustrations, fabric prints, films, sometimes they stay in an endless feed online, or become images that organizations use as a part of their visual identity.

What or who are you loving right now?

Public domain images recently released into circulation and stock libraries that are manipulating the codes in stock photography.

If you were a typeface, what would you be?

Helvetica’s evil twin, Heretica.
