I want to be part of that journey of helping someone fulfill their own creative dream.
Cathy Sison, also known by her artist name Kyashi, is a Melbourne-based designer, art director and calligrapher. For eight years she’s been bringing her design work to all sorts—fashion, beauty and teaching at Holmsglen TAFE—most recently a creative designer and art director at a social enterprise company called Thankyou. Her fascination with Japanese culture and calligraphy inspired Kyashi Writes. She’s been commissioned by Westfield, Lululemon, Factorie and GPO and you can see her work in window displays, banners, in-store displays and online.
She’s a big believer in balance and keeping one day that’s just for her and encourages others to find their own version of creative success—even with a day job.

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.
My design career is a bit of a mixed bag. I started working for agencies in Australia for clients such as Mossman, Veronika Maine, Gazman and Mercedes Benz. I freelanced for a year and then taught design at Holmesglen Tafe. Then moved away from the agency world and into in-house, design for a hair and beauty company called ‘Hairhouse Warehouse’, where my role transitioned from Senior Designer to Art Director. After 4 years I then worked for a social enterprise company called Thankyou working on package design, photoshoots and campaigns. On the side, I freelance and run a modern brush calligraphy business called Kyashi Writes where my clients vary from weddings, pop-up events as well as running workshops with Kikki.K and Lululemon.
