I teach because I get inspired by people who do brave things.

What do you love about design?

I love that through the process of designing we get to explore a variety of perspectives and human qualities. To tell an engaging story to an audience or effectively communicate an important message to them, you have to know their particulars. I love that human-centered kind of design thinking that includes behaviours and personalities!

Why do you teach?

I teach because I get inspired by people who do brave things. Walking into a classroom centered around the critiquing and improving of your innate—and very personal—creativity is no easy task. I get my kicks out of giving kudos to this!

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.

I’ve freelanced in both advertising agencies and design studios around Brisbane since 2005. Right now I’m designing things and stuff at autumn.studio.

What or who are you loving right now?

Currently using try.typography.com in the concept stages of brand identities.

If you were a typeface what would you be?

I wish I were like Sabon by Jan Tschichold, elegant and regal, but I have a feeling I’m more like Nitti by Pieter van Rosmalen, anal-retentive and idiosyncratic.

What’s your favourite blog?

Keeping abreast with topical issues/stories on thehash.today by Josephmark. More specifically the Chrome browser extension that subtly weaves recently trending stories into your day when you open a new tab.
