I think you have to love communication to be a good designer.

What do you love about design?

The pursuit of communicating an idea or a piece of information as clearly as possible. I think you have to love communication to be a good designer.

Why do you teach?

I’ve trained a lot of Juniors and Interns coming through our agency and it made me realise that I just really enjoying teaching. If I wasn’t a designer, I’d probably be a teacher. Shillington allowed these two passions to not be mutually exclusive.

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.

Agency. Agency. Agency. My entire career has been on the agency side of things. It’s allowed me to design in all types of media, on all sizes of briefs, and for all different clients. I’m now a Partner in an agency that works exclusively with Government, NGOs, and the Education and Health sectors.

What or who are you loving right now?

I don’t tend to follow individual designers but I’m always inspired by Aaron Draplin. His core work is branding. I like him because his work’s simple yet thoughtful, and he cares about what he does.

If you were a typeface, what would you be?

Curlz.

What’s your favourite blog?

I like places for good inspiration. Dribbble is great. And Awwwards is great for web design inspiration. (My keyboard didn’t get stuck typing those. They both coincidentally have three b’s and three w’s in their names)
