What do you love about design?

I love design that makes a business difference. Either a campaign to deliver a new service or product or an evolution of a brand (big or small) that then allows them to create memorable experiences for their customers. Simon Sineks ‘Start with why’ is a great look at why some business achieve phenomenal success and why others don’t.

Why do you teach?

There is a great sense of achievement with helping someone achieve a new goal and start on a potential new journey in their careers. It’s an extremely positive time, I get the opportunity to meet people who are completely new to graphic design and get them excited about the potential roads they can take.

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.

My first role was with a signage company where I got the chance to produce work for many of the UK’s household names. After that I worked in the music industry in Dublin before heading back to Manchester to work both agency and client side across many different sectors concentrating on brand and campaign generation.

What or who are you loving right now?

Really enjoying the instagram feed of Chris Clarke who is Deputy Creative Director at the Guardian. Huge respect for the craft and clever approach to design that is produced on a weekly basis. Always a great use of illustration, photography and typography.

If you were a typeface, what would you be?

Albert-Jan Pools FF Din it is modern, adaptable and reliable.

What’s your favourite blog?

I don’t have a regular blog that I read. I follow a lot of entrepreneurs, tech writers, designers and creative agencies on Instagram and Twitter.
