Learn from designers with industry expertise.

I guess I love the ordered chaos of design. I’m a list-maker at heart who likes to have structure, but at the same time love creativity and spontaneous excitement. I think design encapsulates both of these elements too, which is why we’re such good mates.

What do you love about design?

I guess I love the ordered chaos of design. I’m a list-maker at heart who likes to have structure, but at the same time love creativity and spontaneous excitement. I think design encapsulates both of these elements too, which is why we’re such good mates.

Why do you teach?

It stems from my own awesome learning experience when I studied design and felt the young, working designers who taught me were just amazing. Over 10 years later I hope I can be that person to my students and create a positive and exciting learning environment for them to fall in love with design.

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.

I have my own little business called Alykat Creative where I create limited edition prints from my illustrations and designs. So if I’m not winding down with a trashy rom-com or catching up on sleep, I’ll be trying to keep the creative juices flowing on that.

What or who are you loving right now?

Pawel Nolbert‘s photography mixed with simple surreal graphic elements makes me super happy, it’s what I imagine living in an Adobe world might look like. I also love keeping up with illustrators like Alan Coulson who creates amazing realistic portraits and Laura Blythman’s delightfully colourful collage illustrations.

If you were a typeface what would you be?

My go-to typeface is so cliché, Helvetica Neue, but I really do love the Mrs Eaves font when combined with the flicks and lovely rolling connections of the Just Ligatures version, so I’d go with Mrs Eaves if I had to BE her!

What’s your favourite blog?

I’ve been pretty bad these days at finding the time to keep up with the latest design blogs as there are so many popping up all the time! I usually get stuck in the Instagram web and find a lot of creatives that way—but Swissmiss is great for some alternative design inspiration, and not that I’m into weddings at all but I am in to gorgeous photography and I absolutely love the Australian blog/magazine Hello May… founded by a Shillington graduate!
