I see design is a form of advocacy, and a way to lend voice to a person or idea which needs it.

What do you love about design?

I see design is a form of advocacy, and a way to lend voice to a person or idea which needs it. In many cases, valuable products or people are actually mis-represented by ineffective or inappropriate branding. Design is one of many vital ways we can help address these problems.

Why do you teach?

My entire career — and life — I’ve seemingly only learned things the hard way. (call me lucky!) For better or worse, these memorable life lessons have provided lasting memories and ignited a personal passion for helping others excel along their creative path.

Tell us about your design career outside of Shillington.

My education and mentors have always encouraged evolving my clients (and their rules) whenever possible, so I’ve always gravitated to projects and studios that value deep stories, unique concepts, and memorable solutions. This has led to years of jack-of-all-trade roles and surprising new deliverables, for clients of all shapes and sizes.

What or who are you loving right now?

Goods for the Study, reading the latest Best Made Co. catalog, and Freehand Hotels arriving in NYC.

If you were a typeface, what would you be?

Memphis.
