Sivim Ly
Sivim Ly studied at Shillington New York
You’ve studied advertising at the university and then worked as a designer before studying at Shillington. Why Shillington? What made our course different from the others?
Before I decided to go with Shillington, I did a ton of research, tried out one program and even considered going to a university. But I was really impressed with the student work that came from Shillington. It was almost unbelievable to see great work from students within such a short amount of time but it is a lot of hard work and guidance from teachers who have been in the industry for so long, which made the program really worth it for me.
Since you already had previous design experience, how did the course further build your skillset?
The course really let me touch on a lot of different aspects of design like packaging; working with a dieline which I never got to do while studying advertising during undergrad.
If you could give advice to someone starting at Shillington, what would it be?
Be a sponge. Soak in as much information as you can. Always ask questions. Practice makes perfect. Browse through different design books and websites and just really train your eye to find what’s good and what you like.
What made you choose the part-time vs full-time course? What was your experience like and what is the advantage of one over the other?
I’m from Austin, TX and I knew I wanted to move to the city and build a career here so the 3 months program worked out really well for me. I think both have their own advantages and for me, I chose full-time knowing I was able to dedicate 8 hrs a day to class (and many more outside of class as well).
What’s a typical day like working as a designer at the consumer goods company Loeffler Randall?
Every day is different! I work on the marketing and e-commerce team creating newsletters, creative assets and content for the company. I get to touch on other creative aspects of the brand as well, like assisting with art direction for the random photoshoots we’d have in our in-house studio to photo editing and retouching.
What do you love about living and working as a creative in New York?
New York has a drive unlike any other city and I really like the fast-paced workflow that we get here.
What’s on the horizon for you?
I feel super grateful to be working with a great team of people with different backgrounds and experiences. For this upcoming year, I’m looking forward to continuing to help with the brand and potentially touch on more art direction and set/product styling in the future.
